Frank C. Laubach, an American missionary, working in the Philippines
in the 1930's, developed a method of teaching reading that transformed
the teaching of reading to adults around the world. Dr. Laubach
realized that, unlike children, functionally illiterate adults have
years of experience and large vocabularies; they simply need basic
instruction in how to decipher and recognize the spoken word in
its written form. The Laubach method is highly structured, emphasizing
phonics training in combination with simple word recognition, a
system that can, and does, teach any language.
Dr. Laubach's "Each One Teach One" method is used today
throughout the world in helping adult tutors teaching other adults
how to improve their reading and speaking skills.
