Our purpose in Washington County is to promote literacy by providing free individualized reading and writing instruction to non-readers and low-level readers, and promoting conversational skills to the non-English speaking community.

Would you like to help someone who is struggling to read?

How about boosting someone's confidence by helping them learn to speak English?

To become one of our Certified Volunteer Tutors, you need to attend one (either Frederick or Hagerstown) of the following 2-day Workshops.  Attending both days is required to receive your certificate.

HAGERSTOWN -- held at Benevola Utd Methodist Church, 19925 Benevola Church Rd, Boonsboro MD (9am - 3:30pm)

  • Feb 10 & Feb 17

  • Sept 29 & Oct 6

FREDERICK -- held at  Frederick County Literacy Council, C Burr Artz Library, 110 E Patrick St (9am - 3:30pm).

  • Jan 6 & Jan 13

  • Apr 28 & May 5

  • Sept 15 & Sept 22

When you're ready to get started, just follow these easy steps:

  1. On our HOME page, click ABOUT US, then on FAQs to read our Orientation document before attending the Workshop.  This  will answer many of your questions.  Feel free to email or call our office (301-739-4208) with any questions.

  2. When you're ready to register for our 2-day Tutor Training Workshop, click the TUTORS tab at the top of our website., then click on BECOMING A TUTOR.  Register at the bottom of the page (please NOTE that the dates on the registration form are wrong; we are trying to correct this problem).
