Students

Students with the Literacy Council are either adults learning to read (Basic students) or adults learning to speak and read English as a Second Language (ESL students.) The students range in age from 17 to 70 and are all nationalities. We will help students who do not speak any English or are reading on a first grade level to students who what to get a GED.

Students are referred to the Literacy Council by themselves, family, friends, or agencies that are working with them. Once referred, students are evaluated and as soon as possible each of them is placed with a tutor. Nearly all of the tutoring is done one to one - one student to one tutor. There is no cost to the student unless he or she is willing to help pay for the books they write in.

If you know of someone who needs help learning to read or learn English, call the Literacy Council office at (301)739 - 4208. Confidentiality is respected.
