With GOAL classes right around the corner (start date September 8th!), we are looking for appropriate students to register for the program: adults who can read at an elementary level but want help boosting their comprehension. Below is the GOAL student recruitment narrative – feel free to copy, edit, and share it with any candidate (maybe your current student) you feel is right for GOAL.
Hi there, the Literacy Council has you listed as someone who is waiting on basic education or literacy services. You are invited to attend a free course for adults who want to improve reading comprehension. The course is called GOAL.
In the course, you will practice understanding what you read, finding the main idea quickly, and guessing meaning from clues in a story. GOAL begins Tuesday, September 8th, and lasts 8 weeks. It helps you learn test-taking skills for GED classes later.
When and Where: Tuesdays 5:30–7:00 PM at the Fletcher Library (individually or in small groups with two teachers), and Saturdays 10:00–11:00 AM at the Literacy Council Study rooms in Trinity Church, a quick review day with one-on-one tutor help.

We Got a Grant!!
Thanks to community connections made at a recent non-profit event, LCWC was encouraged to apply for a grant through NiSource/Columbia Gas’ Charitable Foundation. With NiSource’s team for guidance and the LCWC hardworking grant volunteers, we were awarded $5,000 towards building and bettering our services! Hip hip hooray!!

Community Partner Spotlight: Refugee Welcome Network
LCWC tutors, do you ever find yourself getting sidetracked from a student’s language or educational goals because of assistance they need in other areas? Join representatives from Refugee Welcome Network to learn about their services and who is eligible to receive help. As LCWC tutors are better informed about RWN and what aid is available, we can avoid doubling up efforts while also increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of these already established services. It’s a win-win!
